Tips from the Slush Pile! (aren’t you excited?)
So I get to tag all new submissions with their genre, make sure the files open correctly, basic housekeeping stuff.
We opened our slush pile for one week and received 186 submissions so I had my work cut out for me.
About a third of the way in, I thought “I ought to be keeping a tally!” So I started one.
Stories that started with:
Waking Up – 15
First Day of School – 4
Last Day of School/First Day of Summer – 4
Prophetic Births – 6
Dream Sequence – 7
Cliches are cliches for a reason.
